STVLibraries' Inclusion in Lib-Web-Cats Directory

On December 3, 2008, the St. Thomas of Villanova Libraries was officially included in the Lib-Web-Cats directory.  Lib-Web-Cats (library web sites and catalogs) is a free directory of libraries throughout the world.

 

The STVLibraries is the 6th academic library from the Philippines that was listed in the directory.  Among others, include: John L. Detwiler Memorial Library (Adventist University of the Philippines,  Silang, Cavite); Rizal Library (Ateneo De Manila University, Quezon City); Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo (De La Salle University – Dasmariñas, (Dasmarinas, Cavite);  University of Santo Tomas Library (University of Santo Tomas, Manila); and, UPOU Library (University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), Los Baños, Laguna).

This directory is maintained and edited by Marshall Breeding, the Director for Innovative Technologies and Research at the Jean and Alexander Heard Library at Vanderbilt University.

National Book Week Contests

The National Book Week Committee of the Philippine Librarians Association Inc. (PLAI) would like to announce the holding of various contests in celebration of the 74th anniversary of the National Book Week which will run from Nov 24-30, 2008 

This year's National Book Week theme is "BATANG PALABASA DALUBHASA SA KULTURA". According to Contest Committee Chair, Ms. Leonila Galvez, there will be four (4) contests this year, namely : STORYTELLING CONTEST of the book "Ang Pambihirang Buhok ni Lola" by Renee Villanueva. This is open to all Grade 4 to 6 students from the 14 divisions of the National Capital Region; ESSAY WRITING CONTEST which is open to secondary school students from the National Capital Region; POSTER-MAKING CONTEST which is open to college students of both public and private colleges and universities  nationwide; and lastly, a BOOK PARADE CONTEST which is open to all elementary and secondary public or private schools in Metro Manila.  

Registration of interested students for the storytelling, essay writing and book parade contests as well as the submission of entries for the poster-making contest will be for the period Sept 30 up to Oct 6, 2008.

The National Book Week is in cooperation with The National Library (TNL). For contest details, please contact Over-all Chair Fe E. Abelardo at TNL through 525 0926 or Ms Leonila Galvez of M. Hizon Elementary School through 252 2223.

Regional Conference on Empowering Librarians in the 21st Century

The Philippine Librarians Association Inc - Southern Tagalog Region Librarians Council (PLAI-STRLC) will hold its Regional Conference and General Assembly on September 24-26, 2008 at the Queen Margarette Hotel, Domoit Diversion Road, Lucena City, Quezon Province.

 

The theme for this year activity is “Regional Conference on Empowering Librarians in the 21st Century.” It aims to stress the importance of the involvement of librarians in enabling students and its community to become critical thinkers and effective users of information in all formats and media; strengthen librarian's understanding of the library’s basic functions and how technology has changed these basic functions; and to empower the administrators, librarians, information professionals and teacher-librarians in conquering successfully the library challenges of the 21st century.

 

The topics include: ABC’s of Librarians’ Success in the Workplace; Personal and Professional Competencies; Library Administration and Management; Basic Library Functions and Services; Current Trends in Information Technology as Applied to Libraries.

The 2008 Library & Information Literacy Workshop Series : An Invitation
Topic: Information Literacy

The St. Thomas of Villanova Libraries cordially invites you to the 2008 Library & Information Literacy Workshop Series.  The workshop series provides the SSC-R de Cavite community with opportunities to learn about new technologies, resources and issues affecting the changing information landscape.

  1. Lecture-Workshop on Information Literacy and Research Skills for Students. Information literacy comprises the abilities to find, evaluate, use and communicate information. In the 21st century, these complex abilities are more important than ever for today's students as they enter the world of work. The lecture-workshop for college students will be conducted in coordination with the Communication Arts Department on June 30 – July 4, 2008 at the College Auditorium. However, for high school students it will be incorporated in one of their activities conducted during library periods.

 

2.      Workshop on Information Searches Using Internet/Web-Based Resources. The Internet has established itself as an indispensable research tool and information source. Learn how to navigate the Internet efficiently and to harness the power of search engines, directories, and the "Invisible Web" to make your Internet searches yield high-quality results while taking less of your time. This interactive session will help you: formulate search strategies; locate and evaluate information; familiarize you with electronic resources; and learn how a skilled information professional can assist you!.  This lecture-workshop is open to all basic education teachers, college professors and students’ enrolled in Methods of Research

Seminar-Workshop on Basic Library Management
Topic: School Libraries

The Cavite Librarians Association, Inc. will be holding a 3-day Seminar-Workshop on "Basic Library Management" on May 26-28, 2008 at the Old Session Hall of Cavite Provincial Capitol, Trece Martires City, Cavite.

It aims to enhance the teachers-librarian and other library personnel’s technical skills on basic library management in school libraries which includes the following topic: cataloging & classifying of library materials, reference & information services for school library, library instruction for teacher librarian, managing school libraries and library automation.
